Advanced Violin Music;

I'll be honest, writing up just one page for advanced violin music has been tough for several reasons! First, researching and 'window shopping' advanced violin pieces online has made me want to buy them all! Second, advanced violin music could and technically should be broken down into smaller subcategory by ability, it's just too broad of a topic. But for the sake of space and time, I have condensed it into just one page.

I've hand picked a few of my all time favorites, some of the pieces I encourage my advanced students to learn, and even some songs I've never played but wish that Santa would give me for Christmas!

Free Advanced Violin Sheet Music.

Virtual Sheet Music is an excellent resource for student, parent, and especially teacher. They have a wide selection of freebies, as well as new featured temporary freebies every two weeks. Virtual Sheet Music also has a huge selection of advanced violin music that you pay a small download fee for.

8notes.com has a handful of good advanced violin music for free. My favorite free piece that they offer is Meditation from Thais. This piece is probably on the lower-mid range of advanced music. It's a great piece for advanced musicians to learn, master, and play beautifully.

Good Books for your Advanced Violin Music Library.

An apple a day....oh I mean a Bach a day! I remember my wonderful violin teacher telling me that playing the Bach Sonatas and Partitas on a regular basis would keep me in great 'violin shape'. Even now, after all these years I make sure that I am always playing out of my Bach book!

Another excellent exercise for your fingers, mind, and ear are daily scale practice. I recommend the Scale System for Violin by Carl Flesch. If your private teacher doesn't have you already playing out of this book, order it for yourself. Scale practice is one of the most critical things you can be doing to improve your play.

Two Thumbs Up Solo Pieces

Some of these pieces you will click on and look at and think, "that's too easy"! Sometimes the key to playing like an advanced musician is playing music that seems easier but that can be played flawlessly.

Violinist who play Schindler's List, fall in love with it! This album showcases the violinist ability to play with emotion. It will work your intonation, vibrato, and shifting technique.

Deep River by Jascha Heifetz - Although this piece is slow, don't let it fool you. The double stops in it will give any seasoned hand a workout! This piece is HARD TO FIND. You can sometimes find it as part of a Heifetz Album. Anything Heifetz, in my opinion, is worth playing.

Taiping Drum - The only way I know about this song is from one of my university professors that was from China. The fact that it's not as well known only adds to it's charm. Play a song that the judges and audience have never heard before (it earns you originality points!) It's a little on the pricey side but very fun to play. This piece will add variety to your repertoire and is definitely different than you've probably ever played. Celebrating the 600 year old Taiping Drum Dance in China, both violin and piano are imitating drums beating with intensive double stopping and chords. If you are looking for a song that is unique, beautiful, intense, and exciting all in one...this is the piece for you.

My Wish List

Admittedly, this is the page when you're going to see my professional teacher mask come down and my "little girl in the candy shop" personality shine through. Some women buy shoes....I buy music. I LOVE violin music. Here are three new songs that I don't have but I really really want. The reviews are great, the music unique, but don't take my word for it, try them yourself.

The Earnest Bloch Violin Album contains all three movements of the Three Pictures of Chassidic Life, for violin and piano. I have played No 2. Nigun Improvisation of this series and absolutely LOVED it. Bloch's style of writing is addicting, he often used Jewish liturgical and folk music as his inspiration for composing.

Butterfly Lovers Concerto - Talk about a piece that is difficult to find, this one takes the cake. The rights for publishing and selling this concerto are being held pretty tight! Short of leaving the country, I have found one shop that sell this product online, Johnson String Instrument.

Red Violin by John Corigliano - This music comes from the film Red Violin, which received the 1999 Academy Award for Best Original Score. The Caprices were composed especially for Joshua Bell.

Good luck with your advanced violin music searching and Happy Playing.
