Attending a Classical Concert -
Understand Proper Concert Etiquette.
Attending a concert is a wonderful experience. Attending a concert using proper concert etiquette is even better! Learn these tips to avoid those embarrassing moments with your family and friends when manners are sometimes not up to par.
"The audience, as well as the musicians, are participants in every concert. When you participate in listening to the music, you will be taking an important part by sharing this experience with others in the audience and with the musicians on stage. Formal concerts are much different from rock concerts or sporting events, and require you to know some specific concert manners."
-The National Association for Music Education
1. If it is necessary to leave during the middle of a concert, do so in between pieces. The same is true for coming back into the music hall.
2. The orchestra will usually begin the performance with tuning. Although it is tempting to continue your conversation, it is important to be quiet. The orchestra will better be able to tune if it is quiet.
3. It is customary to applaud when the conductor walks out onto the stage.
4. Hold your applause until the end of a piece. Sometimes it can be confusing with long pieces that have different movements or long pauses. It is not appropriate to clap in between movements or rests. One easy way to tell when the appropriate time to clap is that the conductor will put his arms down and turn around.
5. It is considered impolite to talk or even whisper during a performance. Performers can hear noises from the stage and be easily distracted. This rule of thumb includes candy wrappers, cell phones, and sounds from opening and closing the program. Try to make sounds only during the applause after a piece.
6. Even though it is so important for young children to experience the classical concert, if they are being restless or disrupting those around them, it is polite to remove them from the concert until they can calm down.
7. Make it enjoyable for those around you. Do not stand up, put your feet on the seat in front of you, or wear large hats on your head during the performance.
If you remember these simple concert etiquette tips and share them with your family and friends then the concert will be a more enjoyable experience for all.
