Suzuki or Traditional... what violin instruction is right for you?

Choosing a violin teacher is no small task, and one that will make a huge difference in your violin experience. You will come across people who tell you that you HAVE to play Suzuki, or that Traditional is the ONLY way to go. I am here to tell you that there is no right or wrong answer. Find a really good teacher (whether Suzuki or Traditional) and you will find the right method.

While there is no right or wrong answer to choosing which method of violin you will study there are key differences that you should be aware of. Perhaps most notably is the difference of learning to read music. In the beginning Suzuki Method teaches music by ear. Conversely, traditional method teaches music by note reading. You will also discover that there is rarely a pure Suzuki or Traditional method teacher. Violin educators are finding that a healthy mix of both is most beneficial. I studied violin with Traditional method and played a lot out of the Suzuki books. In the same way, many Suzuki teachers today are adding elements of the Traditional method to their instruction.

Use the links below to explore in depth the pro's and con's to both Suzuki and Traditional methods. But remember, the true secret to finding the perfect violin teacher isn't necessarily in the method, it's in the teacher. Find a great teacher and you're off to a great start!
